The purpose of this tool is to help you generate the syntaxes needed to run an Exploratory Structural Equation Model (ESEM) with ease, as the process can become quite tedious and complex. Specifically, the tool guides you through the process to generate the Mplus syntaxes needed to run a Normal ESEM-, a Bifactor ESEM- and the eventual ESEM within CFA and Hierarchical ESEM solutions (if needed). This is done in four steps:
  • STEP 1: Insert your basic CFA factor structure as indicated below (no covariances or variance constraints should be load, only indicators)
  • STEP 2: Copy the appropriate syntax generate for the Regular ESEM or Bi-Factor ESEM solution into Mplus and run.
    NOTE: It is very important that you copy the USEVARIABLES list with the syntax so the indicators are in the correct order as specified in the syntax or your results will be incorrect!
  • STEP 3: (Only for bifactor ESEM): Uploud the Mplus Output generated in STEP 2, to generate the H-ESEM code
  • STEP 3: (Only for H-ESEM): Upload the Mplus Output generate in STEP 2, to generate the H-ESEM code

Step 3 (Optional):
If you require ESEM within CFA code / Bifactor-within-CFA code or Hierarchical ESEM (H-ESEM) code upload the corresponding Mplus ESEM output file that corresponds to the regular ESEM in the case of the H-ESEM or the bifactor ESEM for the Bifactor-within-CFA.
Crossloading Options:
This uses the largest loading for each factor and fixes it as the cross-loading in each factor. Experimental function where the script attempts to identify the most optimal loading from the
specific original factor where it also has the smallest cross-loadings to fix in the model.
If the default loadings option was the optimal solution then there is no difference between
the options as it was already the optimal solution.
